When our neighbors become ill, they have many choices for good healthcare in our region. One consideration is how treatments for a disease or illness will impact daily life.  The Aquilino Cancer Center, a local treasure on the campus of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, was built to minimize this  impact and make managing care easier for patients and families.
I had the pleasure recently to tour the Cancer Center and to speak with Mike Aquilino, whose generous donation helped the Center become reality. His story illustrates the importance of community-based care.
Mike had to balance the needs of his three children and his job while caring for his wife, Tammy, who had cancer.  Sadly, after several years, Tammy lost her battle with cancer. In her memory, Mike decided to make a difference. Shady Grove had a vision for a free-standing cancer facility that could make managing cancer more convenient. With Mike’s help, the state-of-the-art Aquilino Cancer Center opened in Fall 2013, the first  comprehensive cancer center of its kind in Montgomery County.
The Center brings outpatient cancer services under one roof, so patients do not have to drive to multiple locations. It houses top oncology physicians and a team of nurse navigators, who guide patients and their families through treatments.  The center also is home to our area’s only physician-led Integrative Medicine program, which connects   patients to lifestyle therapies as a complement to their traditional treatments. Patients can access specially designed fitness, yoga and cooking classes. The center also offers cancer rehabilitation therapy, imaging services, access to clinical trials, spiritual support and a boutique, which sells products cancer patients may need.
I was inspired by Mike’s story. I appreciate having these services so close for my friends and clients. If you appreciate this, too,  consider making a referral to me or donating   directly to the center at the contact information listed in our newsletter. Thank you for supporting great cancer care for our neighbors.
